Agriculture GPR - Drainage Tile Mapping

Farmland Area, State of Illinois

In the expansive farmland area of the State of Illinois, OmniVueNDT demonstrated the versatile application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in an ambitious project aimed at assessing drainage tile systems for a renewable energy initiative. This case study showcases the integration of cutting-edge technology and engineering prowess.

Engaged to support a renewable energy project, OmniVueNDT utilized a custom-built GPR land surveying system designed to endure the rugged terrains and high wind conditions prevalent in the field. Employing a 350HS antenna by GSSI and a Real-Time Kinetics Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK GNSS) rover setup, the team ensured accurate and real-time assessments (See picture 1). The GPR system delved into the near-surface underground, while the RTK GNSS provided precise navigation with corrected Easting and Northing coordinates, achieving an impressive 5-10cm relative point accuracy.

The project necessitated meticulous survey line tracing for quality control and work progress tracking across a vast 450-acre farmland. The following day, data processing and pre-processing commenced, demonstrating a commitment to efficiency (see Picture 2).

Combining GPR data with coordinates, OmniVueNDT transformed the information into a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) database, meticulously mapping survey line locations, drainage tile layouts, and cleanouts for each farmland (see Picture 3 and 4). This extensive database provides structural engineers and engineering firms with a holistic understanding of the land's sub-surface, aiding in informed decision-making for sustainable development projects (see Picture 5).

Despite the challenges faced, including the deployment of numerous skid plates for the surveying system, OmniVueNDT's engineering acumen and state-of-the-art technology ensured the successful completion of this intricate drainage tile mapping project. This case study exemplifies the adaptability and precision that GPR can offer in the hands of skilled engineers, making it an invaluable tool for infrastructure assessments and development projects.
